Summary: "Pretty good setup, hurried ending"

Like most Cussler works (or collaborations), this story starts at some point in the past and lays a groundwork that will become central to the plot later.

Unlike most others, this book then adds another layer of historical possibilities, and is actually very cleverly thought out.

There is a central villain, and perhaps two, and there are lots of outlandish setups and Bond-ish escapes, building to what could have been a crackerjack climax.

Sad to say, the ending fizzles. Threads are left dangling, the denouement is brief and unsatisfying, and the last couple of paragraphs read much like the ending of a Dirk Pitt novel.

I can't disrecommend the book to Cussler fans, but then neither can I say it's among his best.

Still, the Oregon Files series is one I look forward to reading, and this one won't change that attitude.

The "Oregon Files" is probably my favorite of the Clive Cussler series, even surpassing the original "Dirk Pitt" adventures, and "The Silent Sea" is a another worthy effort in this line.

Summary: "Not up to Cussler's standards"

While "Silent Sea" is relatively enjoyable, in my opinion it isn't anywhere near Clive Cussler's high standard for writing.

I was intrigued by the prelude, as always, but the payoff for that was highly disappointing. The main villain was also a disappointment.

Whoever Putnam is using as an editor should be fired as well. It was obvious that this novel was simply fed through Microsoft Word to edit, because there were countless misused words. "Clamored" being used instead of "clambered"is one example I remember well. I've never seen people clamor out of a submarine!

Summary: "$14.99 for a single read and no resale, loan, or donation value e-book?"

Kindle and other electronic formats have no printing costs, no resale, loan, or donation value, and lots of good reads out there for $9.99 and less. I love my Kindle, and this book looks like a pretty good read, But my price pain point is just south of $9.99, so I'm going to pass on it and I recommend you Kindle folks do the same.
